Pocket Full of Notes

Someone got fired the other day for showing up drunk to work, perhaps not for the first time. It also turned out he was making such a mess of his berth that the carpet had to be taken up and thrown away, along with the mattress.

The music in the dish pit has been great. Today The Byrds. Recently, M Ward, and a long Kinks set. Thanks Michael.

I finally skied out to the ski hut, on a beautiful, sunny, windless day. From there, there are almost no signs of civilization. It’s beautiful. The building is solar-heated, and quite cozy.

Package mail is stranded in Christchurch, and nobody has any idea when it will be delivered. Flat mail is getting through, but if you have anything to send me, it’s probably too late. Your good wishes and email have been wonderful.

The temperature has been dropping. To some extent, we have been getting winds from the direction that tends to bring cold winds. But it will probably be dropping something like a degree a day between now and when I leave on February 6th.

The plan is that I will be in New Zealand until March 13th, fly to Sydney, and leave there for home on the 17th.

Someone else got a tattoo of a penguin on his butt. No photo available.

We have eaten all the Bush Era bacon. But it looks as if some Early Obama meat is still around.

The station seems far away. actually, only about a half-hour on skis. so the way I ski, that's about a twenty-minute walk.

Ski the Hutt. Solor and toasty warm. Someone else went there that same day seeking solitude. Instead they got me.

  1. One of your more thought-provoking posts. Not sure the following count as thoughts, though:

    • When you get fired how do you get home? If no flights are going, what do you do while waiting? (Besides drink, I mean.)

    • Is the 90°S tattoo yours? Is it permanent?

    • Does someone on-base do tattoos?

    • Good thing you have Bush bacon and Obama meat, because bush-meat is illegal.

    • Remember to shout “Sydney or the bush!” at least once.

    • Neither the 90°S nor the butt-penguin are mine. My body remains perfect. The tattoo artist was a tourist, only here for a day, and sine he was using just a needle, it took a while to do tattoos of any complexity. I believe he did only four, but there was quite a line for more.

When one i fired or quits, one gets the next plane home. This can be quite a while if it’s the winter. People have stopped doing their job over winter, and just hung around the galley waiting, reading, and eating. Perhaps drinking.

      SYDNEY OR THE BUSH!
