On January 1st of each year, the surveyors mark the Geographical South Pole, and plant the marker that was made by the winter crew. They have been getting elaborate over the last twenty years or so.

Pretty much everyone who visits South Pole has a picture or two taken at the Ceremonial Pole and the Geographical Pole. We make fun of Distinguished Visitors or tourists who come for a few hours: they buy a hoodie, they get their Hero Shots and they leave. I went out Sunday to take Hero Shots of Josh, one of the Satellite Engineers; his mom wanted them.

We like to brag, we like to prove our experience happened and aren’t content to just let it happen. Hey! I was here! Blogging is what we do now, but we’ve been shouthing “Hey! I was here!” for 10,000 years.
